The first large scale St. George's Day event in Budapest raised over HUF 2 million for charity, entertaining a full house with a feast of English music, a funny take on a Shakespeare piece, and a great variety of refreshments, games, prizes, + dancing.

Spend enough time in this country and Hungarian pride in famous people with Magyar origins begins to rub off on you. I’ve gone way beyond being satisfied by announcing that Albert Szent-Györgyi, who discovered ascorbic acid or vitamin C, did so in Szeged in the 1930s, or that Drew Barrymore’s mother was Hungarian, as was Goldie Hawn’s.

Xpat Wine Club held its spring event at Veritas Wine Bar on Friday 27 April, with the usual mix of new and veteran expats from a range of countries as well as Hungarians, all lubricated by that truth-promoting tipple. As at all Xpat Wine Club events, the atmosphere was open and friendly, easing the way to make new contacts and relationships, both business and personal.

“For money one needs to have a strong character”- said one of the richest businessmen in Hungary Mr. Sándor Demján, who celebrated his 70th birthday on the 14th of May. Mr. Demjan, an investor and philanthropist is undeniably a living legend, finding the way to succeed next to all the tough leaders of the country starting from János Kádár, through Gyula Horn, up until the present Viktor Orbán.
